Coastal Signs is pleased to present Vertices, a group show comprising work by Vivian Lynn, Emma McIntyre, and Peter Robinson.

Vertices presents a collection of works that are animated by a restless play between physical and mental states. The title of the exhibition is a scientific term for the site where points or edges meet, borrowed in reference to the shared interest by the artists in folding, pattern-making, and tricks of surface and space.

Emma McIntyre’s large-scale painting is an alchemical meditation on classic composition and timeless desires. Vivian Lynn’s Mind Fields are corporeal mysteries; Rorschach-like biological forms that float on shimmering metallic grounds. Robinson's large grid – made of delicately joined lengths of thin wire – is enormous yet occupies only a sliver of space. The shimmering grid partitions the gallery and acts as a filter or focus-puller that blurs and refocuses McIntyre's and Lynn’s paintings.

Vivian Lynn was born in Pōneke Wellington in 1931 and died in 2018 in the same city. Lynn’s work has been the subject of three recent solo exhibitions at Phillida Reid, London – Beyond the Either / Or (2024), SPIN (2023), and Mind Fields (2021) – and has been included in group exhibitions such as: Gwangju Biennale: Minds Rising, Spirits Tuning (2021); Folded Memory, Te Pātaka Toi Adam Art Gallery, Wellington (2023-24); Finding Shape: Sriwhana Spong and Vivian Lynn, Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, Wellington (2023); and Our Silver City, 2094 at Nottingham Contemporary (2021-22). Lynn’s works have been widely exhibited and acquired by institutions in Aotearoa New Zealand including Te Papa Tongarawa, Museum of New Zealand; Toi o Tamaki, Auckland Art Gallery; Te Puna o Waiwhetu, Christchurch Art Gallery, as well as Smithsonian Institute, Washington; Honolulu State Foundation and Honolulu Art Academy, Hawaii, amongst others.



Emma McIntyre (b. 1990, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland) graduated with a BVA (Painting) from AUT University in 2011, and an MFA from University of Auckland's Elam School of Fine Arts in 2016. In 2019 she was awarded a Fulbright General Graduate award to study an MFA at ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena, that she completed in 2021. Recent solo exhibitions include: Aragonite and conchiolin, Château Shatto, Los Angeles (2026); Syllables in Oleander, Air de Paris, Paris (2025); Among my Swan, David Zwirner, Hong Kong (2025); Objects or Vapours, Coastal Signs @ 40 Anzac Ave, Auckland (2024); An echo, a stain, David Zwirner, New York (2023); and Pearl Diver, Château Shatto, Los Angeles (2023). 



 
Peter Robinson (b. 1966 Hakatere, Ngāi Tahu/Kāi Tahu) studied sculpture at the Ilam School of Fine Arts (1989) and is currently associate professor and Dean Māori at Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Arts and Design. Robinson’s work has been exhibited extensively in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. He was New Zealand’s representative at the 49th Venice Biennale (2001), participated in the 5th Auckland Triennial (2013), 13th Istanbul Biennale (2013), 11th and 18th Biennale of Sydney (1998/2012), the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane (2018) and the 8th Baltic Triennale of International Art, Vilnius (2002), among others.
