Coastal Signs and Te Uru Contemporary Art Gallery are pleased to offer a special edition by Peter Robinson, in advance of the major two-person exhibition, Peter Robinson and Giorgio Griffa: Differences in kind and rhythm, opening at Te Uru on 7 June 2025.
The associated fundraising edition is titled Blind Date (7 June 2025) and is exactly that; the date, drawn by the artist on the day of the exhibition opening, with his eyes closed. Each work will feature the same date, but will be unique in appearance.
Peter began the Blind Date series several years ago after visiting a room of On Kawara's iconic date paintings at Dia Beacon. Where Kawara's monochromatic paintings are small and meticulously crafted, Peter's are large and the letters unruly. The contingency of drawing blind results in unexpected, charmingly wonky, results. As is often the case with Peter's work, the drawings are the result of a process of translation of an inherited art history; in this case, one that is itself an existential reflection on notions of time and the structures we impose upon it.
All proceeds from the sale of this edition go directly to the costs associated with the exhibition and an accompanying publication Peter Robinson and Giorgio Griffa: Differences in kind and rhythm. The new book will be released after the opening, and includes extensive documentation of the show, as well as four texts commissioned by local and international writers.
